Sermons and bible studies to prepare, meetings to attend, people to visit, fires to extinguish... and in the midst of all of this making family a priority. There is also the expectations that come with a ministry position from those outside of ministry... especially for the pastor. People always have a perception... that often does not match the Bible or God's direction... and when you do not follow "their" path to ministry perfection, they get upset... something else to deal with. All of this stress can often cause God's man to question God's purpose in calling him to minister to people. This is very often a lonely position.
However, God seems to have a way of recharging our batteries... refocusing our sights on the real reason for ministry. Yesterday I had a lady come to my office to share what God is doing in her life. She said that in all her years of attending church that she had never been drawn to a relationship with God. She really did not understand the whole aspect of having a close, personal relationship with the God of heaven... it had never been taught! She shared with me that over the past year she has learned things that she had never heard... that she has grown as a follower of Jesus Christ more in the past 12 months than she had for 35+ years! Her quote to me was amazing... "I never knew it could be this good!" She began to tear up and thank me for leading as God has called me at OBC. I told her that it gets even better as we continue to seek His glory! I share this story for one reason... God quickly put in perspective for me why he called me to ministry. He did not call me to ministry to attend meetings or squabble with people over meaningless, petty complaints. God called me to ministry to affect kingdom change in the lives of the people He places me in the midst of... to help disciple them to be loving followers of Jesus Christ! Thank you Father for the perspective... and thank you to the lady who visited her pastor yesterday with encouraging words!

Pastor Sean

Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. What is meant by this phrase, "wear out"? It has in it the idea of reducing a little this minute, then reducing a little further the next minute. Reduce a little today, reduce a little tomorrow. Thus the wearing out is almost imperceptible; nevertheless, it is a reducing. The wearing down is scarcely an activity of which one is conscious, yet the end result is that there is nothing left. He will take away your prayer life little by little, and cause you to trust God less and less and yourself more and more, a little at a time. He will make you feel somewhat cleverer than before. Step by step, you are misled to rely more on your own gift, and step by step your heart is enticed away from the Lord. Now, were Satan to strike the children of God with great force at one time, they would know exactly how to resist the enemy since they would immediately recognize his work. He uses the method of gradualism to wear down the people of God.

Watchman Nee

Being Self-Centered

Matthew 23:25, 26, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.”

Who among us has not experienced self-centeredness? By the very nature of man, we were created to be other-centered, but we are self-centered. As we look at the creation of the world and God’s desire for man as a bride for His son, we see selflessness. We are made in His image, and nothing but selflessness will suit us. I remember a frightening experience in Malaysia when I went for a walk and a pray, and the “pray” was to play much more into the day than the walk itself. I went close to the shipyards and stumbled across over thirty dogs that encircled with the intent to attack me. As I slowly backed out of the place and surrounded myself with people, the dogs retreated. The point is that though there is nothing positive in the Bible said about dogs or men, most people love a dog, but it is only a blessing when it gives itself to something greater. Dogs are made to give themselves to man and thus become a blessing. Man is made to give himself to God and in that way be a blessing. Man simply is not made to be self-centered, which causes him to shrink and become animal-like; he is meant to be God-centered. Often I have challenged the oppressed to go find someone in great need and help him. The results have been consistent: The helper grows happy! The world says that there is a way, and Jesus says that He is the Way, a Way of giving, of sacrifice, of loving. Those who follow Him on the Way can become so happy as to feel that they might explode. There is no happiness in building for one’s self. We need to realize that we will die, and so for what will we live? Our life can be given to something greater than ourselves, to our loving Father and His people, not exalting self-centeredness, but preferring to despise it.

The List

Galatians 1:6-9, “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!”

I was presented a list to follow that would assure any believer’s deliverance from the enemy. Looking at the list I began thinking to myself how everything in the steps to freedom could be done by an unbeliever. That being the case, how could the list be Christ-centered? Jesus was not mentioned in even one of the ten steps. Any list that calls for the flesh to do something to improve itself is ultimately doomed to failure. There may be initial success, but in the long term, there will be none. Steps taken in the power of the flesh would have to eradicate flesh, and the flesh will have none of that! It will not participate in destroying or hindering itself! (The odd thing about Satan is that he loves to stir the flesh, but he is at the same time an enemy of the flesh, since he is involved in every suicide and murder to destroy man.) In these times there are myriad methods for club growth, personal growth, financial growth, family growth, and spiritual growth. Be alert and ask the question, “Could this method apply to an unbeliever? Could an unbeliever follow the same steps?” If so, Christ has been left out and we are fixing to be sidetracked. Start with what He has already done for us, get a firm grasp of that, and then move to more of what He has done for us. It is a struggle. I often find myself headed down a track that I do not want to take. I get a check in my spirit and stop talking about the latest book, method, miracle, experience, and doctrine and move back to Him. I have prayed for the last thirty-seven years that God would be gracious to me and not allow me to move from Jesus, add to Jesus, subtract from Jesus, or stop lifting Him up. It is true that He is our sufficiency. I cannot count the programs that are going around today, and few ask why the last program did not produce what it promised it would when introduced two years ago. Why are those that were so involved in the latest “move” of God back in the same place? Let hearts and minds dwell on the Man who did everything and yet did nothing, for it was the Father doing it through Him. Then ask for testimonies of growth and God’s faithfulness at the end of two years of that. The first thing for which He sets us here is to create in others a hunger for Himself. That is, after all, what prepares the soil for the preaching.
If you set a delicious cake in front of two men who have just had a heavy meal, what will be their reaction? They will talk about it, admire its appearance, discuss the recipe, argue about the cost—do everything in fact but eat it! But if they are truly hungry it will not be very long before the cake is gone. And so it is with the things of the Spirit.
No true work will ever begin in a life without first of all a sense of need being created. But how can this be done? We cannot inject spiritual appetite by force into others; we cannot compel people to be hungry. Hunger has to be created, and it can be created in others only by those who carry with them the impressions of God.

-Watchman Nee

Revelations

II Corinthians 4:7, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves.”

Often I used to pray, “Lord, I want all of the revelation of You that is possible for a human being to have in this life.” Over, and over, and over again I prayed it. Then one day He spoke: “The revelation of My Son is like a roomful of treasure chests. There is one chest for every one of My children, but no child will receive them all. There is one for you, and that one you can have.” I more fully understood the body of Christ and His love for each and every one of us. Just as the body needs countless cells to express a human being, it takes countless believers to begin to express all that Jesus is. He is way too big for one person, and any one person that believes he possesses it all is deluded. Paul himself said that we are like members of the body; he refused to see himself as the whole body. I am afraid that many believers have succumbed to the Christian caste system, wherein a particular believer or a certain expression of the body becomes the norm or standard for everyone else. In my early days of being a believer I remember attempting to copy another person’s expression of Christ. It was error then and it is error now. I have often said that if I could change anything in my Christian life as it developed, it would be one thing: I would have taken all of the “great” people of God and kept them on the fringe of my life where they belong, leaving Jesus in the center. No one person has it all, and we each have what He has determined is best for us and has given to us.

Time for God

Time, for God
by Mike Wells

Romans 8:29, “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” 1 Peter 18 & 19, “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison.”

I was thinking recently how God is not in time, but time is in God. He is in the yesterday, the today, and the tomorrow. This is why God is never in a hurry, since He has no place to go. He has already been in the future. He is not worrying over us, for He has been in our future and sees how glorious it is. I was thinking, too, that after His death on the cross, Christ stepped out of time and entered eternity. From man’s perspective, Jesus was gone for three days; but in exiting time (where a thousand years is like a day for the Lord) and stepping back into eternity, we basically have no concept of what all He might have accomplished in eternity, because we cannot impose time on eternity. We know that in eternity He took all those that would have believed from the past and all those that would believe in the future and crucified them with Him in a point in time. If that is true, then when He was preaching to those held captive outside of time and in eternity (He descended before He ascended), He was actually preaching to all of mankind. Therefore, He was preaching to all that would believe and all that would not. Suppose this means that I was there in eternity, and it was in eternity that I believed in Him. Now step back into time to see that at a point in time I confirmed a decision that I had already made in eternity. The proof of this is the fact that the day I believed in Jesus, it was not a strange experience but more of a homecoming. In my spirit I knew that this was the place where I always belonged. I know that you who made the same decision experienced the same sense of belonging.

October 2010 Parent Newsletter

Open publication - Free publishing - More teens

Why am I where I am?

If you were to branch out beyond just a time of prayer each day, other parts of your life and even your whole viewpoint of life will have to be altered. This new attitude must come for a very special reason, so that you may go deeper into another level with your Lord. To do this you must have a fresh attitude toward yourself as well as toward the Lord. It is an attitude that must go much deeper than any of you have ever known before. To do this I introduce a new word to you, the word is abandonment. To penetrate deeper into this experience of Jesus Christ, it is required that you abandon your whole existence, giving it up to God. Let us take the daily occurrences of life as an illustration. You must utterly believe that the circumstances of your life, that is every minute of your life as well as the whole course of your life, anything yes anything that happens have come to you by His will and His permission. You must utterly believe that everything that has happened to you is from God and is exactly what you need. Such a look of faith towards your Lord will make you content with everything. Once you begin to believe this you will then begin to take everything that comes into your life as being from the hand of God and not from the hand of man.

Jeanne Guyon

May-June 2010 Bi-Monthly Newsletter

Open publication - Free publishing - More newsletter

Have you ever met someone who doesn't seem real? However we do not need to hid behind anything anymore. Jesus is in us. So now we can just sit back and let Him do it all! Sound too easy?
So it's Easter, what's on your mind as it relates to this weekend? My mind goes to the seemingly endless pursuit of yet another service. Don't get me wrong; I love what I do; however I battle with the thought of "Is this it? There's got to be more." For me the "more" is remembering that Jesus is enough. Now before you agree, think on what that really means. If we were to have no church building to meet in, or if we lost our jobs tomorrow etc. Would He be enough? Well would HE? Just food for thought. I continue to seek out meaning through church, family, money, vehicles or a great church service. Big deal! Let’s all agree what the big deal is really about. I think that Jesus just wants us to find joy in Him and Him alone. Can it be that simple? Can we allow it to be?

JG

Easter Sunday Preview

Shaking the Winter Blues

Isn't Spring a great time of the year? It not only represents the beginning of life for many things; flowers, animals, warmer weather... but it also represents the end of something - winter, and all the cold and darkness associated with it! As we come out of a time of year that for many is depressing, long and gloomy and head into a season of vividness and clarity, many cannot wait to shed the dullness of winter. They believe that things will get better throughout the Spring and summer. However, the reality is... Winter will come again!
Let me suggest something for you this Spring. If you are searching for a sense of joy, peace and fulfillment in the changing of the seasons... consider seeking for all the above things in someone who never changes... Jesus Christ! We all need a change of heart that goes beyond the arrival of Spring... and that only comes from the resurrection power of Jesus.

This Spring... enjoy the beauty of God's creation, but turn to Jesus to truly change who you are and who God wants you to be in Him!

Praise God for the risen Jesus!

Come Out This Saturday

Easter is almost here and from the looks of it.....Saturday promises to be a great day with Spring temperatures and family fun. OBC's Easter Festival is this Saturday from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Old Onancock High School. Enjoy games, prizes, sno-cones, inflatables, 4000+ Easter Eggs, and meet Dora the Explorer! God is very available to help us conquer any of those walls. And one wall that we all face, even if the rest of life has been smooth, is the mortality wall. To break through this wall, each individual has to make a personal decision as to whether they'll respond to Christ's resurrection power and reach out in repentance and faith to take his hand and accept his offer of a glorious eternity with him. This message encourages each person who is up against any wall to ask, seek, and knock—and be assured that God will answer.

What wall are you facing?
